Planning & Economic Development

Mongar’s planning and economic development focuses on balanced regional growth, improving connectivity, and promoting sustainable livelihoods. The district emphasizes agro-based industries, hydropower, and small-scale enterprises, while investing in infrastructure such as roads, urban planning in Mongar town, and social services to enhance trade and living standards.

Brief History

Mongar’s planning and economic development began with the government’s efforts to decentralize development in eastern Bhutan during the 1960s, focusing on road construction and rural development. Over time, the district grew into a regional hub, with Mongar town emerging as an important center for trade, administration, health, and education, supporting both local agriculture and modern economic activities.
